Abstract

Üsküdar is a part of the three towns of Istanbul (bilâd-ı Selâse: Galata, Eyüp, Üsküdar). Üsküdar, which was the place where the attacks, the merchants and the immigration from the east had been confronted before Istanbul since the Byzantine period, showed this characteristics also in the Ottoman period. In addition, Uskudar is Istanbul's gateway to the east for Europe. In the Book of Travels “Seyahatname” of Evliya Çelebi, an indispensable source for local history studies, one can come up with information about the places witnessing the period. Üsküdar, an important city of management for Istanbul in Ottoman history, is one of the places mostly mentioned in Evliya Çelebi's Book of Travels. Due to the fact that Istanbul is the gateway to the east, Üsküdar was the starting point of Çelebi’s journeys to east and also the first stop. For this reason, almost all of his ten volumes include miscellaneous information about Uskudar. The purpose of this study is to describe XVII. century Üsküdar according to Çelebi's Book of Travels. Therefore, the information given by Çelebi is presented relatively with archive documents and other literature.
