Abstract

Diabetes is a global health problem affecting families and families in the most productive ages and reducing the life expectancy of the elderly. According to TURDEP-I and TURDEP-II studies, the incidence of type 2 diabetes in Turkish adults has increased significantly over the past years and has increased from 7.2% to 13.7%. The burden of diabetes drains national healthcare budgets, reduces productivity, slows economic growth, causes catastrophic expenditure for vulnerable households and overwhelms healthcare systems. People acquire their perceptions and beliefs about the origins and treatments of diseases through childhood learning and approval by the culture in which they live. A treatment plan that is consistent with the patient's own beliefs increases the chance of success. In the management of diabetes, the sociocultural evaluation of the patient should identify the health beliefs and behaviors that will elicit the social, emotional, cultural, interpersonal and social support of the illness. This article examines the socio-cultural factors that affect the behavior and practice of individuals in diabetes management.
