Abstract

The question of normativity as one of the urgent methodological issues in the contemporary religious studies is at stake. When we look at the history of Religious Studies; three important phases are immediately blind-folded: 1. The classical period of Religious Studies, which is understood as an area of intermingled with or within the service of theology. 2. The period of modern Religious Studies that gained relatively autonomy within or independence from theology, as emerged after World War II. 3. The postmodern period of Religious Studies, in which the Religious Studies is totally independent from theology, and introduces itself as “secular”, “neutral”, “non-confessional” and “agnostic” in methodology. In this paper, we will evaluate the agnosticism in the Religious Studies in the light of the conceptions such as “stance as insider or outsider”, “the necessity of being religious or religious understanding”, “confessional or professional in the study of religion” or “dilemma as to be religious or agnostic in the academy”.
