Abstract

Ilm-i kıyafet (physiognomy) is a sub-branch of ilm-i firaset, gives information about the characteristics of people with reference to limbs. Aristo attempts to identify people by linking body and facial structure with human character traits in his work entitled “De Natura Animalium”. According to Aristotle, that a person's body and facial structure resembles a particular animal reveals its character traits. In the Islamic world, this kind of works has gained momentum along with translation activities. Various kinds of works in Arabic, Persian and Turkish have been written under the name of Ilm-i kıyafet. Especially, we can see that the criterion determined by Aristotle aesthetic for beauty is used for moderate beauty by Sivrihisârî. In this work, we will try to examine the effects of the Aristotelian aesthetics in Shaban-i Sivrihisari's Kiyafat-nâme.
