Abstract

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) is a milestone document in the history of human rights. Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, the Declaration was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 (General Assembly resolution 217 A) as a common standard of achievements for all peoples and all nations. It sets out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected and it has been translated into over 500 languages.(universal-declaration-human-rights). In this declaration, it is generally aimed to develop the feelings of love, respect, friendship and protect the innate rights of man without discriminating between race, religion, color, age and gender. The United Nations regularly monitors and reports human rights violations in the world. Education is emerging as the most important tool for countries to ensure the development of human rights conscious. Education is the process by which an individual deliberately changes his or her behavior through his or her own experience. Nowadays, the aims of education is not only specializing in a science branches, but also being a virtuous person gaining universal values at the same time. Human rights consciousness is regarded as a virtue all over the world. According to Plato “Nothing must be admitted in education which does not conduce to the promotion of virtue.” It is expected that educated people have high level of human rights knowledge and attitudes and behaviors towards human rights. Health staff should be among the best-educated staff on human rights. This study was planned to determine the level of human rights knowledge and human rights attitudes and behaviors of the students of Health Sciences Faculty in Selçuk University. In this study, 154 female and 110 male students were surveyed by using a questionnaire. The questionnaire data were analyzed with the help of SPSS program to reveal the level of knowledge about human rights of the students. The attitudes of students towards human rights, their behavior in human rights samples were examined and the results were analyzed according to various parameters. Obtained results are discussed in detail in the research text.
