Abstract

Our world is roughly four and a half billion years old. The world is the environment of all living things, especially humans. The world, which includes people and other living creatures, allows the needs of all the assets that it creates to be provided from its own resources. The progressive age of the world, the increase in the speed of consumption unexpectedly, the limited resources consumed and the recycling of the limited resources needed as a result of natural resources decreasing day by day become a vital problem in the age of life. The environment is a whole with the living and inanimate beings it contains. Each part of the whole affects others. Human consciously or unconsciously, is the one that causes the most damage to the environment in which it lives. The achievements and approaches required for a sustainable environment should be brought to the communities. Individuals should be ensured to be conscious, sensitive citizens with high level of awareness towards the society and the environment through the education they receive. Teachers will guide individuals to reach this awareness and sensitivity. Teaching is a human engineering. If it is desired that the society consists of citizens, it should be ensured that higher education institutions that train teachers are institutions that incorporate these qualities. Also, since all teachers lead the society as an output / product of higher education, that is, the education system, it is an important issue to measure the attitudes and awareness of prospective teachers attending higher education. Individuals who will perform the teaching profession should be aware of environmental problems and problems related to recycling and should have the necessary sensitivity. The general aim of the study is to examine the pre-service teachers' awareness of environmental issues. Screening model was used in the research. The data were obtained from 297 prospective teachers studying at a foundation university in Istanbul. The “awareness scale for environmental problems” developed by Güven and Aydoğdu (2012) was used as a data collection tool. It has been determined that the level of awareness of teacher candidates towards environmental problems is medium.
