Abstract

A language for specific purposes is the form of a general language used for making statements about a specific field of study. It is derived from the vocabulary in the system of the general language. For instance, the word ‘bridge’ in the general language is also used in different scientific fields such as ‘Dentistry, Anatomy, Civil Engineering’. A language for specific purposes which is distinguished by the specific terms and the dictionaries of it involves a compact use of language to make sentences related to the field under question in oral or written form. In this study, the German and Turkish prospectus of ‘Aspirin’ are contrasted text linguistically in terms of medical language. The findings reveal that in German prospectus the use of specific medical terms is minimized, but information is introduced in question-answer form. However, in Turkish prospectus information is given by the individual use of those terms, which brings about serious incomprehensibility in prospectus.
