Abstract

This study was planned to determine the effect of the activities in visual arts classes based on constructive approach in 6th grades in primary education on democratic attitudes of the students on the classroom environment. The study was designed in pretest-posttest control group random empirical model. The sampling of the study consisted of 52 students who were attending to a primary school in Marmara Region in 2011-2012 academic year first term. 26 students constituted the Study Group and 26 students constituted the Control Group. The activities that were prepared by the author of the study were applied to the students by the author during the study period. The Personal Information Form, which was prepared by the author, and the Democratic Attitude on Classroom Environment, which was developed by Gömleksiz (1993:114), were used in the study as the data collection tool. The unrelated samplings t-test was used as the statistical analysis method, One-Factor Variance Analysis was used for unrelated samplings, and One-Factor Covariance Analysis was used. The eta-square value was computed for each significant result. The findings of the study are as follows: 1. It was determined that there is a significant difference between the democratic attitude posttest points that are corrected according to the pretest points of the Study and Control Group students. 2. Significant differences were detected among the average points that were corrected according to the ‘equality’, ‘being scientific’, ‘openness’, ‘co-working’, ‘participation’, ‘applying class vote’ and ‘minority rights’ sub-dimensions of the Study and Control Group pretest scale average points. 3. No significant differences were detected among the posttest average points of the ‘respect to ideas’ sub-dimension points of the Study and Control Group.
