CONTRIBUTIONS OF CULTURAL AND HISTORICAL HERITAGE TO SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER CANDIDATES : “THE THINGS TOLD IN LESSONS HAD BEEN REAL”

Abstract

Cultural and historical heritage elements are important factors that they reach today and continue live with us, they are witnesses to the term they belong and they make us who we are. However, as they are not used enough in teaching history subjects of social studies lesson, students perceive the history only as a “dead” data stack placed in the book. Perceptibly encountering with these elements provides them to “be as close as a step” to history, as Teacher Candidate 21 stated; and “invigorating of works that they portray in their minds” as Teacher Candidate 25 stated. This study aims to bring social studies teacher candidates in knowledge, skill and value to use museum and historical places in frame of active learning and to contribute for their professional developments by increasing their awareness of this subject with the cultural heritage education. Teacher candidates studying in 1st grade in department of Social Studies, took education related to museum education in lessons of “Archeology” and “History and Civilization of Ancient Ages” and then they brought to Istanbul Archaeological Museums hosting perceptible cultural heritage elements. In study which is conducted with action research from qualitative research methods, teacher candidates filled their worksheets consisting 4 open ended questions in Istanbul Archeological Museum. The data obtained with worksheets filled by 38 teacher candidates, are subjected to content analyze. “The things told in lessons had been real”; this statement written by Teacher Candidate 18 is totally in characteristics of reflecting nature of this study. As a result of this study, awareness of social studies teacher candidates to cultural and historical heritage increased and they experienced to actively use these fields as an educational aspect. Most of the teacher candidates stated that they want to use cultural and historical heritage elements in their professional lives and by doing this they realized how important they are in learning through experience.
