Abstract

Recently, increase in studies about election geography has been seen. In this study, Antalya city is considered in the context of election geography. Accordingly, the general elections between 1980 and 2015 are examined according to the geographical principles and principles, based on participation rates, number of valid votes and party results. Moreover, this structure in the city is also compared with the average of Turkey. On the other hand, this study focuses on the political changes and their causes in the city during the period. Therefore, the basic data of the study was obtained from the Higher Election Board (YSK) and the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT) and various internet web pages. It is noteworthy that the attendance rates have changed continuously from 1980 to the present day by going out of the obtained data. With a participation rate of 91.2% in 1983 and 91.4% in 1987 after the coup d'état, it has passed the 90% band, as in the whole country, and this rate has not been caught again in the city. The participation rates in the 2002 elections showed a significant decline. On the other hand, participation rates in the city of Antalya exceeded the average of Turkey in 1991, 1995, 2007, 2011, 07 June 2015 and 01 November 2015 elections. According to the voting results, in the city of Antalya, it has been seen that the center was left in the elections of 1983, 1987, 1991 and 1995, whereas in 1999 and 2002 the center left was in front. In the course of the election year in 2007, the center-right front was seen in 2007 and 2011, but in the elections of June 7, 2015, the center-left dominance was seen to be center-right again in the elections of 1 November 2015. This shows us that there are fluctuations in the voters who participate in the elections periodically in Antalya. On the other side, the nationalist parties, which had a rate of 29.41% in the June 7, 2015 elections, and the conservative parties vote rates in both in the country as a whole and in the city in the 1995 elections have attracted attention. From these judgments it can be concluded that the election results that the nationalist voters reach a certain number of votes in the city of Antalya and the conservative voters have little concentration in the city center compared to the country as a whole.
