Abstract

In every period, poetry essentially mentions the reflections of social events and social requirements of that period. Among the formations which emerged in the social life of Turkish society during modernization process, the most noticeable changes that deserve attention are those related to clothing. Therefore, fez was mentioned by many poets with both its formal existence and as a popular and comprehensive accessory of clothing, and it was subjected to poems. Cyprus mufti Hilmi Efendi mentioned fez in his poems. As one of the most qualified representatives of Divan poetry, Mufti Hasan Hilmi Efendi wrote about the origin of fez, its arrival in Ottoman country, and the elegance look of those wearing fez. More importantly, he displayed some opinions on its ease of use and the fact that quilted turban and imamah that it represented were deliberately made unpopular for some plausible reasons. With this attitude, the poet who internalized fez as an element of innovation made his choice in favour of understanding and living the reforms as an enlightened person and setting an example for ensuring that the society adopts it as well.
