Abstract

Considered the beginning of Turkey’s Yeşilçam Era in cinema, the 1950s mark a new era as Muhsin Ertuğrul, the sole filmmaker of the Single Party Era, parts with filmmaking whilst the Democratic Party ascends to power. During these years when master filmmakers like Lütfi Akad and Atıf Yılmaz displayed their early works, many examples of the melodrama genre were produced. During this period, Muharrem Gürses not only received huge interest from audiences with his films but also created his own school and cinematic style. Nevertheless, his films were not recognized for their value; instead, they were generally deemed un-realistic, crude and rudimentary by film critics and looked down upon. In this article, Gürses, who earned himself a name largely with rural melodramas, will be examined in terms of his filmography and the realities that he created will be analyzed through issues of modernization, cultural conflict and social gender.
