Abstract

The verbs “to listen” and “to hear”, which are used in Turkish language speaking in Turkey show remarkable and worth being examined semantic characters. That using of the verb “to listen” which is either of these two words and used in place of each other, in the meaning of “giving ear for understanding, acting properly by accepting someone's advice, and paying attention to the thing that is expressed” is worth considering. “Perceiving by using the ear” and “hearing” which are the meanings of the verb “to hear” come to the fore in the present usage. There are some collocations in the use of these two verbs in historical Turkish dialects. The most notable of these collocations is the using of the verb “to hear” instead of the verb “to listen” in the meanings of "giving ear, paying attention, getting advice". We evaluated these semantic features of the verbs “to listen” and “to hear” in our study in the context of historical Turkish dialects and by witnesses.
