Abstract

Language planning can be defined as a rational, goal-oriented and organized intervention to the development of a language. Such a planning with various activities can be pertinent to either language itself (lexicon, derivation, etc.) or extralinguistic subjects (the status of language in the society, orthography, etc.). Modern Turkish underwent an exhaustive language planning (alphabet reform, simplification of the vocabulady, etc.) in the Republican period. Language planing activities before the Republic tried mainly to simplify the written language. New Language Movement is considered to be a round of these attempts. However, this movement, which was characterized as a linguistic and literary movement after the II. Constitutionalism, could be considered as a classic language planning attempt through its stages. Because it includes four stages found classic language plannings: fact-finding, planning, implementation, and feedback. Therefore it would be appropriate to characterize the Movement not just a simplification effort but a language planning attempt. This paper will examine New Language Movement in the language planning framework and present its features reminiscent of a planning. Its hoped that this paper will initiate to interpret New Language Movement which is usually characterized as a simplification effort a language planning attempt. In addition, this paper would help to reconsider the history of Turkish language planning.
