Abstract

The neighborhood is the formation of a spatial unit that is human on the ground today. There is intense interaction between people and the physical characteristics that the neighborhood has. For this reason, environmental factors, individual factors and social factors are very important for the continuity of neighborhood cultures. The culture of the neighborhood formed in the 16th century and maintained this feature predominantly until the end of the 1980s. The neighborhood is a physical and social unit in the Ottoman city. In the Ottoman city, social functions have always been frontal, even as neighborhoods have different functions and supersensibilities. Although these functions continue until daylight, the increase in the number of houses accompanying the growing population has caused the degradation of traditional neighborhood cultures. This study has examined in detail the functions of the neighborhoods in terms of social aspects. Thus, it is explained which social dimensions allow the environmental features that constitute the neighborhoods.
