Abstract

This study investigates pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards education for sustainable development and the variables predicting these attitudes. The study was designed as a survey study. A total of 8817 preservice teachers from the faculty of education in a public university in Turkey constituted the universe. The sample size needed for a 99% interval level and the 5-point confidence level was determined and therefore, a total of 619 preservice teachers among the universe were selected as participants using the stratified sampling technique providing the proportion of each department in the sample group The data was collected using three different data collection tools: the Attitude Scale Towards Education for Sustainable Development developed by the researcher, the Sustainable Development Achievement Test, and the Correlating Scale of the Sustainable Development and its Indicators. The results revealed that the pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards education for sustainable development and their scores on the Correlating Scale of the Sustainable Development and its Indicators are at a high level. On the other hand, their scores on the Sustainable Development Achievement Test were at a low level. It was also determined that the number of the courses on the environment and issues related to environment taken by the pre-service teachers during their university education significantly predicts their scores on the Correlating Scale of the Sustainable Development and its Indicators, and that their department and class level significantly predict their scores on the Sustainable Development Achievement Test. The scores on the Correlating Scale of the Sustainable Development along with the scores on the Sustainable Development Achievement Test were found to significantly predict the preservice teachers’ attitudes towards education for sustainable development.
