Abstract

Modernisation as a government policy, at first starts in the military field with the rescript of Gülhane, soon afterwards affects the daily life by spreading out all government bodies. After the rescipt of Gülhane, with the influence of Western civilization, several changes occur in the choice of profession of the Ottoman society. Some traditional professions undergo a change; some defeated by the concenience that is provided by the developing technology, go out of existence. However with the influence of modernisation, new professions come to light. The authors who keep their finger on the pulse of life and society, reflect the new trade circle and occupational groups occured in parallel with the changing needs of the society through their novel heroes. The aim of this study is to determine the professions that are reflected in XIXth century Turkish novels and present the viewpoints of the authors with regard to these professions.
