Abstract

“Ahi Tradesman Organization”, which emerged in Anatolia in the Seljuk period in the 13th century, played an important role in the Turkization and Islamization of Anatolia and the development of Turkish culture and civilization. At the same time, this artisan organization made an important contribution to spread of Turkish art and trade ethics in Anatolia too. This organization, which operates in a similar manner to today's institutions like Chambers of Tradesmen, Trade and Industry, Turkish Standards Institute, started to develope from the pre-Islamic period and shaped by the principles of Turkish-Islamic morality after the Turks accepted Islam. Ahi Evran who came to Anatolia at the beginning of the 13th century was the founder of The "Ahi Organization" in Kırşehir. Here are some applications of this organization: Protecting handicraftsman, producers and consumers; To identify the prices of goods appropriately; Replacement of goods that have manufacturing defect or wear out before the end of probable life; Elimination of the victim of the consumer; Quality and hygiene control of manufactured or imported goods. This organization by operating with customer satisfaction understanding tried to increase quality in production, to create a supply and demand balance, to prevent waste of resources. Similar to today's applications, it put standards in many areas and proposed punishments including to be ostracized from profession about those who did not comply with the standards. In this study, the consumer protection in today's sense and in the “Ahi Tradesmen organization” era will be compared from many aspects.
