Abstract

Until the middle of the second century og hegira when Islamic religion had not been significantly affected by foreign religions and cultures, Muslim scholars established a definite line of separation between Allah, the World and the man. In this sense, it was adopted as a belief that Allah created the objects and phenomena in natüre directly and without intermediaries and intevened with them steadily. However, with the beginning of the translation of the Greek philosophical works in the last half of the eight century (A.D.), the Muslim had knowledge about the contrasting views amongst the philosophers through these works. Undoubtedly, one of the issues that they fell into disagreement was about causality and the natural obligation dealing wit it. As a matter of fact, this issue, which is one of the two approaches that reflects the antiquity of the Greek atomism, has given a new dimension to the debate in the Islamic world. Within this context, different theories have been developed to address this issue, initially dealing with the context of human libert and responsibility. One of these theories developed is the theory of Muammar b. Abbad as-Sulami’s (d. 215/835), who was a member of the Mutazilite’s Basra School, theory of the natural obligation. In this study, it will be examined whether this theory creates conflict, by bringing theism and deism the opposite sides.
