Abstract

This study is intended to measure the attitudes of science teacher candidates towards using social media as a learning environment. The sample of the study consists of 517 teacher candidates studying in the Department of Science Teaching at Ağrı İbrahim Çeçen University, Atatürk University, Bayburt University and Erzincan University. “The Scale of Attitude of Social Media as a Learning Environment” prepared by the researcher was used in the study as the means of collecting data. While the scale was being prepared, the related literature was scanned and 30 articles made up of 26 positive and 4 negative expressions were included in the scale after the opinions of experts were taken. The scale prepared was applied to 80 teacher candidates primarily. After the analysis of the data, 12 articles which were found to contribute little to the measurement of what was intended to be measured were excluded from the scale and the 18 remaining articles were included in the scale. Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient related to the reliability of the scale used was found to be 0,871. According to the results of the study, there is a meaningful difference among the teacher candidates with respect to the gender variable. There are no meaningful differences among the candidates with respect to such variables as age, level of grade, the university where candidates study, academic grade point average and time spent in the use of social media.
