Abstract

Hoca Ali Rıza who takes part among the Early Period Painters in the Turkish Painting Art is ranked as one of the first names come to mind when the Istanbul themed paintings are mentioned. Mosques, fountains, tombs, mansions, bridges, old houses, streets, coffeehouses and coast cafes with the Bosphorus scenes are among the Istanbul themes which Hoca Ali Rıza gives a place often in his paintings and includes the city's historical pattern. Hoca Ali Rıza who illustrates mostly countrysides, which are distant from the city center or alleys uses the daily life scenes of Istanbul in those paintings. Especially, he chose Üsküdar and its around such as Anadoluhisarı, Selimiye, Bağlarbaşı, Kandilli, Bulgurlu, Doğancılar, Çengelköy and also the other districts like Bebek, Kadıköy, Adalar and Sultanahmet as the location in his paintings. Those paintings which provide us to be informed about the beginning of 20th century's Istanbul streets or its neighborhood's cultural life and economical situation are considered as the documents which reflect that period's Istanbul today.
