Abstract

Cancer is among the leading diseases that threaten human life both in Turkey and in the world. Starting from the diagnosis, the illness brings about radical changes in the life of the individual. The treatment period of cancer has prolonged in parallel with the positive developments in the medical treatment. Along with changing social and economic conditions, health services are also changed and planned accordingly. Within this context, due to the increasing number of cancer cases and the need for an alternative care support in long term treatment processes, palliative care services have emerged. Common in the Western countries, palliative care is a new field in Turkey; however, it has developed rapidly in the recent years. This article focuses on the palliative care which aims to control the pain of the patient and to protect the life qualities of both patient and her/his relatives. The article also focuses on cancer and social support concepts. In this article aims to explain the concept of palliative care, which is a new care understanding in Turkey, it was emphasized the importance of social support in cancer, as well as it was aimed to highlight the mission of social work discipline in the palliative care in accordance with empowerment approach.
