Abstract

The aim of this study is to reveal the effect of the text type on the acquisition of reading skills for secondary school students. Secondary school five students selected by random sampling method from Karabük city Eflani district, participated in the study. In this study, as a case study from qualitative research designs, the questions developed for the analysis of the data were created by the researcher based on the gains of the 2018/2019 reading skills course and by taking expert opinions. The data obtained were analyzed according to the holistic single case study. As a result of the study, it was found that there was a significant relationship between the perception levels of the participants and the text types read by the participants. In addition, it was concluded that the comprehension rates of the students in the sample group and their answers to the questions about the text differed according to the type of text read. In general, especially fable and theater texts, students understand better the literary texts developing around the event and give more meaningful answers to the questions developed for these texts. The findings of the study were discussed and compared with the related literature.
