Cenap Şahabettin (1871-1934) who is one of the main figures of Servet-i Fünun and the founder of modern Turkish poem and also characterize the aesthetic features of Servet-i Fünun with Tevfik Fikret, has an important place in the Turkish literature with his writings on art, aesthetic, language and literature. One of the remarkable writings of Cenap Şahabettin is ‘Mekteplerde Edebiyat’, which was published in the journal of Âşiyân, on November 19, 1908. This essay consists of his opinions on how should be done the ideal literary education.
In our study, Cenap Şahabettin’s essay titled ‘Mekteplerde Edebiyat’, which was published in the journal of Âşiyân will be presented by transferring to Latin alphabet. Also, his opinions that he put forward in “Mekteplerde Edebiyat” will be analyzed and his thoughts and propositions on the aims, methods and functions of literary education will be discussed. His thoughts and propositions will be evaluated in the frame of contemporary approaches to literary education.
