Abstract

Abstract: The Armenian population were always more than the Greek population in Kayseri during Ottoman Period. According to the travel Books of XIX. Century, tax registers, and census records, there was a serious amount of non-Muslim population in and around the city. The tax book, which we examined in the classification with the number of 2050 in the Ottoman Archives of the Office of Prime Minister, was classified as a Population Registry Book in the archives; however, as a result of our examination, we determined that the book was in fact a Poll-Tax (Jizya) Book. In this context, the present study is based on the Jizya Taxes paid by non-Muslim population in Kayseri Sanjak dated 1848/1849 (1264). In those times, Kayseri Sanjak consisted of Kayseri, Develi, Incesu, Karahisar, Sarıoğlan and Zamantı Counties. The Armenian and Greek population were registered separately in these counties according to the neighborhoods and villages together with their economic status.
