Abstract

In the study, it is aimed to determine whether adolescents' perceptions of human values and unwanted teacher behaviour and the effects of unwanted teacher behaviour differ according to their gender and to what extent they affect their academic achievement. The study group of the research was selected by convenience sampling method from adolescents studying at different grade levels in an Anatolian high school in Konya city centre in the 2017-2018 academic year. The study group consists of 303 adolescents, including 140 male students and 163 female students. The research was carried out in accordance with the relational scanning model, which is a subtype of the general survey model. In the study, the "Human Values Scale" developed by Dilmaç (2007) and the "Unwanted Teacher Behaviour Scale" developed by Erben Keçici et al. (2013) were used as data collection tools. Research data were analyzed with SPSS 21.0 program. According to the findings obtained from the study, it was observed that the mean scores of the sub-dimension of the unwanted teacher behaviour scale of male students were significantly higher than the mean scores of the scale sub-dimension of female students. It was observed that there was no statistically significant difference between male students and female students in terms of the mean scores of the human values scale sub-dimension of responsibility, friendship, being peaceful, respect, honesty, and tolerance. A significant negative correlation was found between the students' achievement in physics and the mean scores of the effects of unwanted teacher behaviour. In addition, it has been observed that there is a positive significant relationship between achievement in physics course and the mean responsibility scores from the sub-dimensions of the human values scale; as the responsibilities of the students increased, their academic achievement also increased. The research findings were discussed in the light of the literature.
