Abstract
İnsanlık tarihi kadar eski bir geçmişe sahip olan hediye verme; kültürü oluşturan, sosyal hayatı tesis eden ve ayakta tutan bir gelenektir. Hediye, sembolik bir iletişim dilidir. Hediye vermenin gerçek amacı, karşımızdaki kişiye değerli ve önemli olduğunu hissettirmektir. Önemli mevkilerde bulunan kişilere menfaat temini için hediye sunmak ise rüşvet olarak adlandırılır. Mevki sahiplerinin hediye adı altında rüşvet alması; tarafsız hareket etmeyi engellediği gibi, hizmetin etkin biçimde gerçekleşmesini de zorlaştırır. Rüşvet; toplumların sosyal, siyasî ve ekonomik istikrarını bozar, kamu hizmetine güveni azaltır. Kişinin işini daha hızlı yaptırmak, hakkı olmayan bir şeyi elde etmek, çeşitli yaptırımlardan kurtulmak gibi nedenlerle verdiği rüşvet; toplumsal yapıda eşitsizliğe yol açar. Türk Edebiyatı’nda birçok yazar, sosyal ilişkileri kuvvetlendiren hediye kavramı ile sosyal tenkit unsuru olan rüşvete eserlerinde yer vermişlerdir. Bu çalışmada, hediye ve rüşvetin Refik Halit Karay’ın Memleket Hikâyeleri ve Gurbet Hikâyeleri’ndeki metinlerde nasıl ele alındığı değerlendirilecektir.

Abstract
With a history as long and old as humanity’s, giving gifts is a tradition that creates cultures, builds social life, and ultimately helps to sustain it. A gift is also a symbolic means of communication. The real purpose of gift giving is to make the person on the receiving end feel valued and important. Offering gifts to people in critical positions with the intention of obtaining a benefit from them or persuading them to do something is called a bribe. When people accept bribes under the guise of a gift, it prevents neutrality and makes it difficult for services to be carried out effectively. Bribery impairs the social, political and economic stability of societies, and reduces confidence in public service. Giving of bribes for any reason, such as getting a job done faster, obtaining something that one does not deserve, or getting rid of various sanctions can lead to inequality in the social structure. Many authors in Turkish literature have included the concept of the gift that strengthens social relations, and the bribe that is an element of social criticism. This study discusses how the concepts of gift and bribe are handled in Refik Halit Karay's two short stories: Memleket Hikâyeleri and Gurbet Hikâyeleri.
