SEMIOTICS AND CINEMA OR SEMIOTICS OF CINEMA

The cinema is one of the strongest means of expression. The cinematic language is distinctive, in terms of its visual expressions. So, what kind of language is this? Can it be compared to the verbal languages? How can one use Linguistics, or, more precisely, Semiotic approaches, to make sense of the cinematic language? These questions have drew the attention of scholars since the beginning of the second half of the Twentieth Century. Among them, substantial studies have been done by, for instance, Christian Metz, Roland Barthes, Peter Wollen, and Rudolf Arnheim. In their writings, it is suggested that cinematic visuality attracts semioticians. Moreover, cinematic visuality, as a form of visual languages, comes to show the potential of being analysed linguistically. And yet, it seems that the link between the visual and the verbal languages is not a stable one. When it comes to the understanding of the cinematic language and its expression, to what extent it can be called as the ‘semiotic approach’? This research aims to answer this question, among others: semiotics can be applied in both verbal and visual languages, because these two languages have some fundamental similarities?

Many linguists have different attitudes to grammar teaching. Some think it is not necessary to teach grammar in the second language classroom. According to many linguists is very necessary. We agree with this view. But, grammar teaching is not only to teach the formulas and rules. Grammar teaching should be never based on memorization. Therefore, it must consider many aspects of language teaching. In this context, this study provides some applications (tasks), narration techniques, tables, figures and examples. This study has presented some proposals within the scope of application of the passivisation, {-mIş} morpheme, imperative mood, case suffixes, noun phrases and {-(y)IncA} morpheme. In this study, Turkish morphemes were examined by Larsen-Freeman (2001) approach. Larsen-Freeman thinks language is divided in to three layers: (i) form (linguistic structure), (ii) meaning and (iii) use (performance). The descriptions and applications in this study is not based learners, it is made according to the tutor (teacher). Therefore, the applications in this study must be reconstructed according to the learners level.

A language for specific purposes is the form of a general language used for making statements about a specific field of study. It is derived from the vocabulary in the system of the general language. For instance, the word ‘bridge’ in the general language is also used in different scientific fields such as ‘Dentistry, Anatomy, Civil Engineering’. A language for specific purposes which is distinguished by the specific terms and the dictionaries of it involves a compact use of language to make sentences related to the field under question in oral or written form.
In this study, the German and Turkish prospectus of ‘Aspirin’ are contrasted text linguistically in terms of medical language. The findings reveal that in German prospectus the use of specific medical terms is minimized, but information is introduced in question-answer form. However, in Turkish prospectus information is given by the individual use of those terms, which brings about serious incomprehensibility in prospectus.

Moral Reason, Moral Sentiments and the Realization of Altruism: A Comparative Study of Nagel, ZHANG Zai and WANG FUZHI

This paper begins with Thomas Nagel’s investigation of the possibility of altruism. Altruism, by Nagel’s definition, is “merely a willingness to act in consideration of the interests of other persons, without the need of ulterior motives.” The fundamental question Nagel investigates is: how is altruism possible? The reason why we need to investigate the possibility of altruism is exactly that an altruistic act is not readily
exercised; it requires some effort on the part of the agent. Nagel discusses various cases of “motivational interference,” such as weakness of the will, cowardice, laziness, panic, etc. (Nagel: 66). In addition, we can also imagine that attitudes such as procrastination, apathy, inconsistency, and consideration for one’s future self all pose an obstacle to the causal efficacy of altruistic motivation. Therefore, a successful motivational theory of altruism must explain how altruism is possible under all these motivational interferences.
