Abstract

Abstract

Art has been one of the most powerful means of expression of the human endeavour to make sense of nature and life and to understand existence. Art has long been interested in reflecting the meaning of nature and life as a process that begins with imitation. In the 20th century, with the changes experienced, the object, which moved away from imitation in art, could be subjected to deformation and deconstruction. In the abstract art movement, which has its share of this, there is a production that has severed its ties with the representation of real objects. In this study, the emergence of the abstract art movement since the beginning of the 20th century, its bases, its development in the historical process and the mental process of abstract art perception are analysed through Hilma af Klint. The abandonment of traditional forms in painting and sculpture paved the way for expressing the inner world, emotions and intangible thoughts. While analysing the effects of this form of expression through Klint, the scarcity of women artists throughout the history of art and their efforts to be visible, the gender roles imposed on women and the oppressive and limiting effect of the social structure on women are also discussed to some extent. Hilma af Klint is generally known for her abstract painting before Kandinsky. In 1906, a few years before Kandinsky's famous abstract works, Hilma af Klint began to paint abstractly. However, Kandinsky is recognised as the father of abstract art in the art world.  In this study, the traces left by the abstract works of Hilma af Klint, one of the avant-garde women artists, in the production of abstract art are discussed.
