Abstract

Abstract

With the integration of digital technologies into artistic production processes, the artist has moved beyond simply being the person who directly produces the artwork to assume a role in designing the rules, systems and processes of produc-tion. This transformation has paved the way for the development of approaches such as algorithmic production, generative art and creative coding, whilst also es-tablishing concepts such as randomness, variation, deformation and formal trans-formation as fundamental components of digital art. The aim of this research is to examine experimental forms of practice in digital art within the context of algo-rithmic production, generative approaches and creative coding, thereby revealing the role of controlled randomness and system-based production processes in the formation of digital art’s aesthetic language. The study employed document re-view and visual analysis—two qualitative research methods. As part of the study, the works of Vera Molnár, Casey Reas, John Maeda, Zach Lieberman and Tyler Hobbs were examined in accordance with criteria such as algorithmic production systems, compositional structure, the use of randomness, visual deformation, laye-ring and formal transformation. The analyses focused not only on visual outcomes but also on the works’ production processes, code-based systems and experimental forms of visual expression. The findings reveal that, in digital art, randomness functions not merely as a technical element producing unpredictable results, but as a creative component that expands the aesthetic potential of the systems desig-ned by the artist. The works examined demonstrate that algorithmic processes generate layering, fragmentation, fluidity and formal variations, thereby develo-ping experimental forms of expression specific to the digital medium. Furthermo-re, the research reveals that the artist’s role in generative art production has not disappeared; rather, the artist continues to be one of the key determinants of the creative process through system design, parameter setting, the configuration of the level of randomness, and the selection of output. In this context, the study highlights the decisive role of algorithmic systems and controlled randomness in the formation of experimental practices in digital art; by revealing the continuity between early computer art and contemporary generative art practices, it aims to contribute to the literature in this field.
