Abstract

Abstract

One of the most persistent debates surrounding modern and contemporary art concerns whether art has moved beyond aesthetics. This study argues that the core of this debate lies not in a separation between art and aesthetics, but in the historical transformation of the concept of aest-hetics itself. Accordingly, aesthetics is approached as a multidimensional field extending beyond beauty to include categories such as the sublime, the tragic, the grotesque, and the ugly. Drawing upon the theories of Ba-umgarten, Kant, Hegel, Heidegger, Gadamer, Arthur C. Danto, and Donald Kuspit, the study reconsiders the relationship between art and aesthetics from both historical and philosophical perspectives. It also employs Max Bense's information aesthetics together with Hudu Memmedov's concepts of structure, semantic information, and aesthetic information to argue that works of art should be evaluated not only through their formal qualities but also through the aesthetic and intellectual experiences they generate. Through the analysis of Marcel Duchamp's Fountain and Maurizio Cattelan's Comedian, the article demonstrates that ready-made and con-ceptual art do not eliminate aesthetics; rather, they redefine aesthetic experience by shifting its focus from formal beauty toward conceptual meaning and contextual interpretation. The study concludes that modern and contemporary art should not be un-derstood as rejecting aesthetics, but as expanding and transforming its scope. Consequently, aesthetic, conceptual, emotional, and cultural dimensions should be considered together in the interpretation and evalu-ation of works of art.
