Abstract
17. yüzyıldan başlayarak 20. yüzyılın ikinci yarısına kadar Osmanlı İmparatorluğu ve onun ardından kurulan genç Türkiye Cumhuriyeti nezdinde Fransızca, her daim birinci yabancı dil olma ayrıcalığını korumuştur. Ancak I. Dünya Savaşı (1914-1918)’nın hemen ardından küresel ölçekte siyasi ve ekonomik güç dengelerinin değişmesiyle birlikte Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’nin dünya sahnesine çıkması, II. Dünya Savaşı (1939-1945)’nın hemen ardından da bilhassa bilim ve teknoloji alanında egemenliğinin artmasına bağlı olarak İngilizce de bir dünya dili haline gelir. Bununla birlikte, sözü edilen yıllarda Türkiye’nin Fransa ile olan siyasi ilişkilerinde yaşanan kimi olumsuzluklar sebebiyle de Fransızca Türkiye’deki eski görkemini yavaş yavaş yitirerek, tüm dünyada olduğu gibi başta diplomasi olmak üzere, eğitim, sanat ve kültür gibi pek çok alanda yerini İngilizceye bırakır. Bu çalışmada, Osmanlı’dan Cumhuriyet’e, Cumhuriyet’ten de günümüze yaklaşık beş asırlık bir süreçte Türklerin Batılılaşma çabalarına aracılık eden Fransızcanın dünü ve bugünü tarihsel bir perspektifle incelenmiştir.

Abstract
French had enjoyed its privilege of being the primary foreign language from the 17th century until the second half of the 20th century in the Ottoman Empire and the young Turkish Republic established afterwards. However, also English became a world language due to the debut of the United States of America on the world stage with the changes in the political and economic balances of power on a global scale immediately after the World War I (1914-1918) as well as the increased dominance of the United States, especially in the field of science and technology, following the World War II (1939-1945). Besides, French slowly lost its former glory, backed up by the deterioration of the political relations of Turkey with France in the aforementioned years, and ceded its place to English in many fields such as education, art and culture, particularly diplomacy, in the country as in the whole world. Embracing a historical perspective, this study examines the past and present of French, which mediated the Westernization efforts of the Turkish people over a period of nearly five centuries extending from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey, and from the Republic of Turkey to the present day.
