Abstract

In this study, the differences between the written and oral languages are tried to be explained using two main theories. Also, the current study briefly explains discourse analysis and foreign language teaching, and focuses on two significant points, which are interaction in foreign language and linguistic understanding. Besides, the relations and differences between written and oral language, the theories about the topic, the definition of discourse analysis, communicative tasks, inadequacies of education system and students are exemplified in the current research. It is one of the most-frequently discussed topics both in society and among students that written texts are used a lot and oral communication is ignored in foreign language learning. Although an individual has had foreign language instruction for many years, he has problems while communicating with native speakers of a given foreign language. The leading reasons for the above-mentioned problem are that foreign language teaching methods about oral communication are insufficient and new methods about that field are not produced. Also linguists think that several pedagogical problems arise in foreign language teaching because people are not aware of the fact that different and specific words are used both in written language and spoken interaction. Oral communication has some specific word patterns and structures. An individual pays attention to these details during oral communication. In oral communication, an individual needs the cooperation of the partner a lot; however, we cannot mention about such kind of cooperation in written communication. Communication is processed step by step with trusting the partner in oral communication. Hence, it is an expected result that failure occurs in foreign language lessons especially in speaking classes due to the fact that an effective communication environment and the cooperation with the partner cannot be provided.
